Time For An Update

Published by

on

I began “Interrupting the Silence” a little over twelve years ago in January 2009. It started with a few “I wonder ifs.” “I wonder if I can figure out the technology and how to create a blog.” “I wonder if people will read and respond to what I write.” “I wonder if this might be a part of my vocation.”

The answers to my wonderings have been yes. I figured out how to do a blog. And I’m always a bit surprised by and immensely grateful for your reading and responding to what I write. Thank you. And more than ever I’ve come to see “Interrupting the Silence” as a part of my vocation.

I’ve been wondering, though, if there is something else. And again the answer seems to be yes.

I will soon begin making some changes to “Interrupting the Silence.” I will be upgrading and updating the site. It will be a work in progress over the next few weeks. I’ll be figuring it out as I go. I apologize for any inconvenience this may cause you.

The blog will still be the centerpiece of the site and remain accessible during this time of updating. I’ll also be making some new offerings.

At one level this is about improving and enhancing the site’s appearance and functionality. At another level this update reflects some changes in me, my vocation, and the direction of my ministry.

I am not leaving the priesthood and I have no plans to leave my parish but over the last few years I have experienced an increased calling toward more spiritual formation through spiritual direction, mentoring, book groups, and teaching. I’m planning to offer those online.

I’m excited about the possibilities and thankful for your companionship along the way.

Please let me know about your experience of the updated site and if you have suggestions for either content or format.

Thank you for supporting and helping me to interrupt the silence.

God’s peace be with you,
Mike+

Fr. Mike, I wanted to take the time to thank you for your thoughtful introspect in the Gospels. I have searched many places for someone that could actually see the Gospels as I see them and find deeper meaning that allows the people to satisfy their hunger for the Living Word. You, my brother, have done so and I thank you for helping me with my homilies.

Let us keep each other in prayer and our ministries

Love and prayers that your vocation expands in a lovely way, to meet more needs than you knew about! I have been taking Matthew Fox’ class on St. Hildegard of Bingen, and thinking about 800 years going by before she was canonized and appreciated. I think about God’s sense of time, instead of ours, and Hildegard’s own sure faith that the most important thing is to be useful. To have “veriditas” the greening power, to bring forth fruit. You are doing good work, and we appreciate you! THANK YOU!

I’ve been enjoying your posts for quite some time now, and I always look forward to them. Thank you for being a calm voice of inspiration in an increasingly chaotic world. Your insight into God’s word and how we might apply it to the here and now is so thought provoking. I find it to be ‘a lamp unto my feet.’ I am grateful.

    Fr. Mike,
I am sincerely grateful for your deep, refreshing, heart-touching insight into our walk with the Lord. You have significantly helped me in mine through this blog – I wish I could come worship with you sometime! Perhaps MT and TX are not that far apart from each other???
I look forward to following your OWN journey and learning through and with you. Can’t wait to see what God is up to! Blessings to you.

Mike: For myself, as a Licensed Professional Counselor and Pastor, I like to see people look at their life and where they’re at in it and to make changes, adaptations, or stay the same as needed. I think it’s good to do this. Your direction looks well planned and I think it will be a benefit not just to you but to us who read your work. Best of luck in your ventures and I know that God will be there to guide you and we will be not only more informed but have better lives because of your inspiring thoughts. Thank you for your words and insight each week. Jim Parks

    Hi, Mike!
I have been following your blog for six years.
I feel God’s presence through every address.
I rejoice as a child to know you as a person with an open heart, a person who, through the Word of God, with the example of his life, joys and sorrows, is able to strengthen us in faith, hope, and His infinite Love.
    Thank you!
    Greetings from our Latvia!
Sincerely – Pavel Naumov, physician and evangelist

I can only echo what so many others have already written. Interrupting the Silence has been an important part of my spiritual journey since you started it, filling a void that was left in my life when you left St. Peter’s Kerrville. I read stuff from a lot of other priests off and on, including Richard Rohr and Ron Rolheiser, but your blog is the one I never miss. I’ve often wished that you would write a book but this seems to me to be a better decision. A book has to have an ending. Your blog can go on and grow with you as well as helping us to continue our spiritual growth . I like the way you have organized it so that I can always go back and find something. I just hope you don’t get too hi tech for those of us who struggle with this electronic world.

Thank you, my friend and long time mentor. I pray for God’s guidance as you enlarge your venture.

Dear Mike, I’m so glad you came to give the sermon for Sr. Miriam Elizabeth Bledsoe’s Life Profession in the Order of Saint Helena (4 years ago next month). I was “startled into joy”! And that is often the case when I read your blog. I’m grateful that you permit us to post your offerings to our FB page–I’ve done that many times, to spread more widely what I consider Good News in the ways you delve into the Scriptures. As I read the remarks above, I wanted to note “Same here” or “Ditto” to each one (but didn’t). Thank you for your honesty and for bringing to us your own creative imagination in faithful response to Jesus’ call: “Follow me.”

I can’t tell you how happy I am to read that you acknowledge your desire to expand your ministry and that you’ll keep in touch with all of us at the same time. I believe you have discerned another kind of call and am so glad you have chosen to answer that however you can. I’ve always admired your work and your gifts and I can’t wait to see where this goes.

I’ve followed ‘Interrupting the Silence’ for several years and have always been highly impressed by your insight into Biblical texts. I find your Lectionary based sermons an excellent resource for my private study and sermon preparation. I do hope the wealth of valuable material will still remain available on the ‘new-look’ site. Thank you so much ! Blessings and peace to as your ministry changes and develops.

Dear Father Mike, An update doesn’t seem desirable at first when I’m content with it now. On the other hand, I like the recent change to post sermons on Sundays–the same day when I’ve already read and usually heard another view of the text. I’m a little disappointed when you skip a day. So the update idea looks better. Also, your insights will have a broader reach in different contexts and I look forward to experiencing inspiration in forms that don’t fit the Sermon construct. The recent courses expanded my perspectives in so many exciting ways as will other avenues to come. We’ll all look forward to how you fill an almost blank canvass!

I look forward to your postings on this blog and have often wondered if you were available to offer spiritual direction or other guidance. I’m excited to see what unfolds in this next step for you and hope that the time difference allows me to perhaps participate in a group study or other offering – I’m based in Singapore (the other side of the world time-wise!). Fr. Mike, I just came upon your site while preparing thoughts for my message on Mark 9:38-50 for next week. I plan on quoting (with attribution) some of your thoughts. Then I was amazed by your blog! I was part of a Methodist congregation in Goliad, Texas and used to go spend time at Lebh Shomea House of prayer in Sarita, Texas. I will write directly about that. Currently, my wife and I serve as non-denominational preachers at the senior living facility where we reside. God Bless you!

Joe, I’m glad you found my blog and I hope it is helpful in your preaching. f

Lebh Shomea – Fr. Kelly, Sr. Maria, and Sr. Marie – have deeply influenced and shaped my life. I am deeply grateful to them. I am saddened by the changes that have taken place. But as I learned, Lebh Shomea is a way of being and a part of me even if I am not able to go there. I look forward to hearing about your experience.

Blessings upon you and your wife and your ministry.

      God’s peace be with you,
