Salve Regina

Hail, holy Queen, Mother of mercy, hail, our life, our sweetness, and our hope. To you we cry, the banished children of Eve; to you we send up our sighs, mourning and weeping in this valley of tears. Turn, then, most gracious advocate, your eyes of mercy toward us; lead us home at last and show us the blessed fruit of your womb, Jesus: O clement, O loving, O sweet virgin Mary.

V:  Pray for us O holy Mother of God,
R:  That we may be made worthy of the                            promises of Christ.

Let us pray,

Almighty, everlasting God, who by the cooperation of the Holy Spirit prepared the body and soul of the glorious Virgin-Mother Mary to become a dwelling-place worthy for your Son: grant that as we rejoice in her commemoration; so by her fervent intercession we may be delivered from present evils and from everlasting death. Through the same Christ our Lord. Amen.

The Salve Regina, also knows as Hail, Holy Queen, is one of the four Marian anthems. It is from the middle ages. It has been traditionally used at Compline from Trinity Sunday until the First Sunday in Advent at which time it is replaced by the Alma Redemptoris Mater.

I think it’s so great that you,an Episcopal priest in the Diocese of West Texas, even know this.

David, I even pray it! But don’t tell anyone, shhh. On a more serious note I think there is a deep connection between Christology and Mary. She can only ever be understood and venerated as the Mother of God, Theotokos. That is as much a statement about Christ as it is about Mary.

It is good to hear from you. I hope you are well.

      Peace,
      Mike+
